Garo(牙狼〈GARO〉（ガロ）, literally 'Fanged Wolf' in English), sometimes referred to as Golden Knight Garo(黄金騎士ガロŌgon Kishi Garo), is a Japanesetokusatsutelevision series. It was broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 7, 2005 to March 31, 2006, lasting 25 episodes (with one additional 'Overview' special, summarizing the events of episodes 1 through 13, aired before episode 14). Since 2007, the show has also been aired in other countries like Italy (on MTV), Malaysia (on 8TV), and Spain (on Canal Buzz). The show's HD remastered version will be broadcast on TV Tokyo from July 8, 2016. It is the first installment of the 'GARO' franchise, composed of several installments including live action television series, films, TV & film specials, and anime series. The television series has been licensed for a North American release by Kraken Releasing.^[1]

Production

The series was created and chief directed by Keita Amemiya (Kamen Rider ZO, Zeiram). It is directed by Makoto Yokoyama (Power Rangers) and Kengo Kaji (Uzumaki). The creature designer is Yasushi Nirasawa, well known later as the designer of the Imagin for Kamen Rider Den-O, also designing the monsters of Kamen Rider Blade and Kamen Rider Kabuto.

Plot

Garo focuses on the life of Kouga Saezima, who has assumed the title of Makai Knight to protect humanity against dark demonic manifestations called 'Horrors'. In his quest to purge them, he encounters a young girl named Kaoru whom he saves from a Horror, but learns that she is stained with its demonic blood. As a rule, those that have been stained by the blood of a Horror shall be cut down, or else they will die painfully in approximately 100 days. Kouga spares Kaoru and tries to find a way to purify her before her remaining time expires. Thus, the series focuses on Kouga's developing relationship with Kaoru and his stand in protecting humanity in accordance with the wishes of his father, the previous Garo. In the process, encountering another Makai Knight named Rei Suzumura who eventually becomes his ally, Kouga confronts his father's former disciple who is also the cause of a recent string of Horror attacks in preparation of a more sinister advent of the Horrors' originator, Messiah.

Horrors

The main antagonistic form in the series, Horrors are demons that reside in a netherworld realm and thrive on the darkness of humanity. The Horrors that enter the human world through everyday objects that became Inga Gates through a mass of darkness, also known as Inga Horrors, possess the body of the first human with inner darkness they come across. As the Horrors feed on humans, preying on them on a nightly basis, it is a Makai Knight's duty to hunt and slay the demons. Later entries in the series reveal more types of Horrors.

Video games

A video game based on the series was produced by Bandai for the PlayStation 2, under the name Golden Knight Garo. Two versions were released: a 'normal' version with the game disk, instructions, and standard pamphlets, and a more expensive 'Limited Edition' version which came with a green 'Fire' recolor of the metal Zaruba ring from the 'Equip and Prop Vol. 1' Garo toy.

A mobile game titled Garo: Makai no Meikyu(牙狼<GARO> -魔戒の迷宮-Garo Makai no Meikyū, lit. 'Garo: Makai Labyrinth') was released on May 27, 2016.^[2] It serves to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Garo franchise and includes all characters from the live action series and the anime series.

Byakuya no Maju

Garo Special: Byakuya no Maju(牙狼〈GARO〉スペシャル 白夜の魔獣Garo Supesharu Byakuya no Majū, lit. 'Garo Special: Demon Beast of the Midnight Sun') is a two-part mini-series that premiered at the end of 2006.

Red Requiem

In July 2009, Tohokushinsha Film announced that a GARO feature film will be released in the fall of 2010. Garo: Red Requiem(牙狼〈GARO〉～RED REQUIEM～) was theatrically released on October 30, 2010. The story is a sequel to the original TV series, with Keita Amemiya directing once again. Ryosei Konishi and Hironobu Kageyama reprise their roles as Kouga/Garo and voice of Zaruba. Red Requiem uses 3D image technology developed by the Tohokushinsha group company Omnibus Japan. Makoto Yokoyama will also be returning to choreograph the action sequences.

Kiba

Kiba Gaiden(呀〈KIBA〉～暗黒騎士鎧伝～Kiba Ankoku Kishi Gaiden, lit. 'Kiba: Dark Knight Side Story') is a spin-off V-Cinema featuring the story of Barago and Kiba the Dark Knight, released on September 7, 2011.

Makai Senki

Garo: Makai Senki(牙狼〈GARO〉～MAKAISENKI～) is a second season of the Garo television series that premiered in select theaters on September 24, 2011, before beginning broadcast in syndication on October 6, 2011.

Soukoku no Maryu

Garo: Soukoku no Maryu(牙狼〈GARO〉～蒼哭ノ魔竜～Garo Sōkoku no Maryū, lit. 'Garo: Demon Dragon of the Blue Cries') was released in theaters on February 23, 2013, serving as an epilogue to Makai Senki, depicting Kouga Saezima's journey to the Promised Ground to retrieve Gajari's body. Ryosei Konishi was initially the only confirmed member of the cast,^[3] but Ray Fujita, Shouma Yamamoto, Ozuno Nakamura, Yukijirō Hotaru, Hironobu Kageyama, and Hiroyuki Watanabe have also been confirmed to appear in the film.^[4] The guest stars in the film are Yuki Kubota as Kakashi, Anna Aoi as Meru, Tetsuya Yanagihara as Esaruto, and Keiko Matsuzaka as Judam.

Yami o Terasu Mono

A third TV series titled Garo: Yami o Terasu Mono(牙狼〈GARO〉～闇を照らす者～, lit. 'Garo: The One Who Shines in the Darkness') was broadcast on April 5, 2013. The series is set in the near future and features an entire new story with a new Garo named Ryuga Dougai venturing into the Horror-plagued Vol City. The series also presents a brand new main cast that includes Wataru Kuriyama, Tsunenori Aoki, Junya Ikeda and fashion model Miki Nanri.^[5]

Tougen no Fue

In March 2013, the Garo team announced a new film titled Garo Gaiden: Tougen no Fue(牙狼外伝 桃幻の笛Garo Gaiden Tōgen no Fue, lit. 'Garo Side Story: The Tougen Flute'), released on July 20 of that year. Set during the time of Soukoku no Maryu, Tougen no Fue follows Makai Priestesses Jabi and Rekka as they travel to the northern forests to protect the mystical and titular flute. Yasue Sato, Mary Matsuyama, Masahiro Kuranuki, and Kanji Tsuda reprise their roles from the franchise as Makai Priestess Jabi, Makai Priestess Rekka, Makai Priest Shiguto, and Makai Knight Kengi, respectively, and also stated to appear in the film are Kumi Takiuchi and Miku Oono.^[6]

Zero: Black Blood

Zero: Black Blood(絶狼〈ZERO〉-BLACK BLOOD-) is a spin-off six-episode miniseries starring Ray Fujita as his character Rei Suzumura from the original TV series. How to install tile on concrete steps. Makai no Hana

A fourth Garo television series titled Garo: Makai no Hana(牙狼〈GARO〉-魔戒ノ花-, lit. 'Garo: The Makai Flower'), which was broadcast in April 2014, takes place between Makai Senki and Yami o Terasu Mono. With the exception of Yukijiro Hotaru reprising his portrayal of Gonza, it features a new cast consisting of Masei Nakayama as Raiga Saezima, the son of Kouga and Kaoru who inherited his father's title as the Golden Knight Garo, Atomu Mizuishi as Crow the Phantom Knight, and Natsumi Ishibashi as Mayuri, a mysterious tool with mystical powers that takes the form of a young woman.^[11][12]

Anime television series

An anime adaptation of Garo was released in October 2014, titled in Japan as Garo: Honō no Kokuin(牙狼〈GARO〉-炎の刻印-, lit. 'Garo: The Carved Seal of Flames'). It is produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by Yūichirō Hayashi. Taking place in the fictional country of Valiante in the Middle Ages, head writer Yasuko Kobayashi explained that, with the exception of Zaruba, it is unrelated to any characters or stories in the rest of the Garo continuity.^[12][13] The series has been licensed by Funimation as Garo: The Animation, making it the first Garo installment to see a North American release.^[14]

A second series called Garo: Guren no Tsuki(牙狼〈GARO〉-紅蓮ノ月-, lit. 'Garo: The Crimson Moon'), which takes place in Japan's Heian period, was announced to be released in 2015 alongside a film to coincide with the Garo tenth anniversary.^[15]

A film version of the first series, titled Garo: Divine Flame(牙狼〈GARO〉-DIVINE FLAME-), was released in theaters on May 21, 2016.^[16]

A third series was announced to be released.^[17]

Gold Storm Sho

Garo: Gold Storm Sho(牙狼〈GARO〉－GOLDSTORM－翔Garo -GOLDSTORM- Shō, lit. 'Garo: Gold Storm Flight') is both a film and a television series that serve as sequels to Yami o Terasu Mono. Wataru Kuriyama and Miki Nanri reprise their roles and are joined by new cast members (among them is Masahiro Inoue as the series antagonist Zinga). The film adaptation was released in theatres on March 28, 2015 while the television series was broadcast from April 3, 2015.^[13][15]

Bikuu

Bikuu(媚空－ビクウ－Bikū) is a film starring Sayaka Akimoto reprising her role as Bikuu from Makai no Hana. It was released in theaters on November 14, 2015.^[15] Akimoto performs the ending theme 'Sengetsu ~Hikari to Yami no Soba de~'(繊月～光と闇の傍で～, lit. 'Crescent Moon ~Beside the Light and Darkness~').

Makai Retsuden

Garo: Makai Retsuden(牙狼〈GARO〉魔戒烈伝) is an omnibus television series which features the cast of the previous live action series. It celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Garo franchise and began broadcast on April 8, 2016.^[16]

Ashura

Garo: Ashura(牙狼〈GARO〉-阿修羅-) is a special episode, with the Garo production team collaborating with New Japan Pro Wrestling to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Garo franchise. It features Hiroshi Tanahashi as Gouki and Togi Makabe and was broadcast in Japan on July 1, 2016.^[18][19] Taking place between Makai Senki and Makai Hana, Kaoru tells a young Raiga the story of one of the first Makai Knights to bear the Garo title: Gouki.

Zero: Dragon Blood

A brand new television series about Ray Fujita's character Rei Suzumura was originally announced as one of many new projects the Garo Project team were working on in 2015 and it was originally just known as Zero.^[16] In June 2016, it was announced that the series would be titled Zero: Dragon Blood(絶狼〈ZERO〉-DRAGON BLOOD-) and it will be broadcast in Japan on January 6, 2017.^[20]

Kami no Kiba

Garo: Kami no Kiba(牙狼〈GARO〉-神ノ牙-, lit. 'Garo: Divine Fang') is a film of the series featuring Wataru Kuriyama's character Ryuga Dougai in production. As of November 2016, there is no planned release date.^[17]

Gekkou no Tabibito

Garo: Gekkou no Tabibito(牙狼〈GARO〉-月虹ノ旅人-Garo Gekkō no Tabibito, lit. 'Garo: Moonbow Traveler') is a film in production to star Masei Nakayama as Raiga Saezima to serve as a sequel to the Makai no Hana television series. As of November 2016, there is no planned release date.^[15][17]

Garo: Makai Senki (牙狼〈GARO〉～MAKAISENKI～, ^{[Note 1]}) is a Japanese tokusatsu television series serving as a sequel to Garo, airing on TV Tokyo between October 6, 2011 and March 22, 2012. The catchphrase for the series is 'The knight's oath, shines in gold' (騎士の誓い、金色に輝け。Kishi no Chikai, Konjiki ni Kagayake.).

Ryosei Konishi, Mika Hijii, Ray Fujita, Yasue Sato, Hironobu Kageyama, Ai Orikasa, and Yukijirō Hotaru reprise their roles from the original television series. Shouma Yamamoto reprises his role from the Beast of the Demon Night special. Mary Matsuyama and Masahiro Kuranuki reprise their roles from the Red Requiem film. Plot[edit]

Prologue[edit]

Almost 20 years into the past, Goki Fudo, Flash Knight Lord, trained his twin boys to succeed him as the next knight. Although Sigma was the more talented one, Goki chose Leo as he felt Sigma didn't have the heart of a protector. Unfortunately, that didn't sit well with Sigma and he forsaken his knighthood. Leo never wanted to succeed as Lord and both brothers decided to restart their careers as Makai Priests. As adults, both dreamed about a solution to solve the Horror threat and Sigma designed a great magical weapon, Magōryū Idea. The most powerful anti-horror magical tool to ever be designed, Sigma teamed up with Mio (a love interest to both brothers) to search for a means to power Idea. With the help of Mio, Sigma realized Idea's power core needs the remains of a powerful horror and human sacrifices to realize Idea. However, Sigma has killed innocents to experiment on, breaking the codes of their order. Mio tried to stop Sigma, but it led to her death. Leo vowed to stop his brother's mad crusade, but he disappeared. Sigma would later steal the remains of a powerful horror, Gyanon, to give him great magical powers. Leo would eventually gain prominence and became a priest of the senate, where he was called 'The Second Coming of Amon.'

Story[edit]

After Chapter of The Black Wolf and Red Requiem, Kouga Saezima's deeds as Garo promoted him to become a Senatorial Knight. Before answering the Senate's call, Kouga defeated a Horror when a Red Masked priest appeared and magically cursed him with The Mark of Death. Despite his mark, he accepted his promotion and secretly investigated into the matter without informing anyone aside from Leo. Answering directly from the Watch Dog Grace, he is partnered with Leo to handle unique and difficult missions.

As Kouga carried out his missions, the level of difficulty increased as he gotten weaker from his mark. He later finds out that Rei and the rest of the Makai Knights have all been marked. As they investigated deeper into the mystery (in between sealing Horrors), the knights suspected a Makai Priest(s) as it's clear that the attack was carried out by a fallen priest. Eventually, Rei and Kouga fought Red Mask and unmasked him, surprised to see the face of Leo. Although the order now knows the face of their target, nobody was able to find Leo.

The truth is revealed after Kouga chased after Red Mask after he stole the access key to the Mado Train. After Garo survived battling through a massive Horror's Den, Garo still had to face Red Mask and his automatons. It was when Kouga was at his weakest that Leo arrived to save him by activating his Lord armor, but Sigma escaped. It was then Leo explained about his past and his twin brother's mad quest. Although the truth has been revealed, nobody could stop Sigma. He revealed himself through a magical message, giving the knights an ultimatum: they need to forfeit their armor if they want to live.

At the Senate floor, there were knights willing to give up their armor while some feel it's an insult to give them up, causing internal conflict between knights. Kouga's title as Garo settled the knights down and promised to find a solution. However, this meeting was a trap. Sigma wanted to lure all the knights into a single place and trapped them in a unbreakable barrier. Sigma accelerated the death mark to hasten their deaths. With limited options, Kouga called forth Gajari (a powerful deity that's part of the order) to help transport his body where Sigma is so he could end the madness. Sigma had stolen the train and intends to use the moon's power to increase his powers. Garo managed to slice off Sigma's cursed arm (that made the marks), cancelling everyone's mark and saving all the knights.

The train crashed during the battle and Sigma salvaged the remains of the train and captured Kouga to travel into the Makai Realm. Once they entered the makai world, Sigma transformed the remains of the train and used Kouga's body to realize Idea. With the help of Baron, Zero, Lord, Rekka, Jabi, and Kaoru, they managed to free Kouga, but Idea remains active. Garo and the rest of the knights attempt to stop it, but it was too powerful as it can regenerate any destroyed parts. When they invaded the control room, Sigma boasted the might of his creation, but he spoke too soon as his malice awakened Gyanon. The horror absorbed Sigma and took control of Idea. The entire automaton is now the new body of Gyanon. The might of the entire order descended upon Gyanon as the knights fought against Sigma's automatons and the priests prevented Gyanon from entering the human realm. Leo eventually suggested for the priests to give up their brushes, to allow the knights to create a powerful spiritual weapon to take down Gyanon. In a coordinated effort, all the knights fired upon Gyanon and Garo finished Gyanon for good.

Despite restoring balance to the world, Sigma is still at large. It was while Kaoru prepared a feast for Kouga that Sigma took her hostage and forced Kouga in a duel to the death. Sigma knows he's dying, but he still had enough energy left for one last fight. Sigma was defeated, but Kouga's home was destroyed. When Gajari helped Garo, he promised to fulfill a favor for Gajari if he helped him and it was time for Garo to honor that deal. With little time, Kouga bid Kaoru and his friends farewell and he entered the Promised Land in search of a part of Gajari's body. Kouga's journey continues in Demon Dragon of the Blue Cries.

Theatrical releases[edit]

Throughout the remainder of 2011 and into 2012, the Garo production team showed three-episode blocks of the program before their television premieres at select theaters in Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Hokkaido. The release schedule for these (up through episode 24) were:

Soukoku no Maryu[edit]

Garo: Soukoku no Maryu (牙狼〈GARO〉～蒼哭ノ魔竜～Garo ~Sōkoku no Maryū~, subtitle literally 'Demon Dragon of the Blue Cries') will be released on February, 2013, and serves as an epilogue to Makai Senki. It will tell the story of what happens to Kouga Saezima when he travels to the Promised Ground to retrieve Gajari's body. Ryosei Konishi was initially the only confirmed member of the cast,^[2] but Ray Fujita, Shouma Yamamoto, Ozuno Nakamura, Yukijirō Hotaru, Hironobu Kageyama, and Hiroyuki Watanabe have also been confirmed to appear in the film.^[3] The guest stars in the film are Yuki Kubota as Kakashi, Anna Aoi as Meru, Tetsuya Yanagihara as Esaruto, and Keiko Matsuzaka as Judam. JAM Project will contribute to the soundtrack of the film, performing the song 'Kaze ~Tabidachi no Uta~' (風～旅立ちの詩～, 'Wind (The Traveler's Song)').^[4]
