Is it due to having multiple tnsname.ora files on the same machine. No, every application looks for its own tnsnames.ora, and if you get errors, then it means that something is wrong, not necessarily with tnsnames.ora. Multiple TNSNAMES alias for single database: April 20, 2010 Larry Catt Leave a comment Oracle provides for the ability to have multiple tnsnames aliases for connection to the same database instance in a standard TNSNAMES.ORA file. I have multiple versions of Oracle and it saved tnsnames.ora files all over the place. Older ones got stored in program files under oracle but newer ones got stored under an app directory in my hard drive. A file called tnsnames.ora have to be present and that file must be set up correctly on the server hosting the database from which database users want to connect to other remote databases. In this example, we want to connect from the Boston database server to the remote database servers in Toronto and London. So you would want to push the updated tnsnames.ora file to every client using puppet or an equivalent solution in your shop. When you do something like this however, you want to be 100% certain that your tnsnames.ora file is valid.
The sqlnet.ora file is one configuration file. It can be client or server side, usually located with the listener.ora or tnsnames.ora file. The sqlnet.ora file is a special options file where you can add parameters to the Oracle Net architecture.
I have installed Oracle 11g, and I can connect as sysman
to the Oracle database, but there is no tnsnames.ora
file that I can find.
Do I need to generate the tnsnames.ora file myself? If so, where do I place it? If not, how does Oracle generate it for me? If I do need to generate it, what is the appropriate syntax for the file?

Mat$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
is the directory where tnsnames.ora
file is created by DBCA and/or NetCA.
$ORACLE_HOME
is a path like /u01/app ..
, it is an OFA compliant path that the installler uses as default if not overriden by installer.
As far as i know the tnsnames.ora
needs to be placed at the<ORA_INSTALL_FOLDER>product11.1.0client_1networkadmin
folder
