Donald Keene, the organist and choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension, put together a three-concert tribute to the French composer and organist Maurice Durufle in which virtually all of the composer's works were performed. The first two concerts took place at Mr. Keene's church and at the Manhattan School of Music last week.
The finale, at the Riverside Church on Sunday afternoon, included choral works and a piano duet, but the program's most moving performances were Marie-Madeleine Durufle's authoritative, exquisitely registered accounts of the organ works by her husband, who died in 1986.
A large mirror behind the Riverside Church's organ made it possible to watch Mrs. Durufle's performance, although her performances were so fluid and supple that one scarcely needed visual confirmation of her graceful keyboard and pedal style.
Mrs. Durufle began with the 'Prelude, Adagio and Choral Varie' (Op. 4), on the plainchant hymn 'Veni Creator.' In the Choral Varie,' Mr. Keene led a small men's choir in unadorned readings of the plainchant before each of the four increasingly complex variations, giving the listener an opportunity to focus again on the basis of the exploration and giving Mrs. Durufle an opportunity to see to the progressively bright registration. Mrs. Durufle also played the Scherzo (Op. 2), an energetic contrapuntal piece that explores some fascinating harmonic and coloristic byways. And she closed the concert with an electrifying, impassioned performance of the 'Prelude et Fugue sur le Nom d'Alain,' a memorial to the organist and composer Jehan Alain built on both a musical representation of his name and the theme of his 'Litanies.'
Simplicity was the salient feature of 'Notre Pere' (1976), the direct, concise a cappella setting of the Lord's Prayer that opened the concert. In this and in the more expansive, involved 'Cum Jubilo' Mass (1966), Mr. Keene drew a solid if not always fully blended sound from the tenors and basses of the Riverside and Ascension Choirs. Mark Kruczek's organ accompaniment enlivened the performance, as did William Parker's firm readings of the solo baritone sections.
